North End Marathoner Doesn’t Let Rare Eye Disease Slow Her Down
Saturday, April 9, 2011
Battling a rare eye disease isn’t stopping one runner’s vision of finishing the Boston marathon. North End resident Elizabeth Nuzzo is battling a rare eye disease, Acanthamoeba Keratitis, an infection of the cornea in which tiny amoebae, or organisms, attack the eye. The resulting damage can lead to total vision loss. However, this hasn’t slowed Elizabeth down.
On April 18, she will run her 2nd Boston Marathon as a member of Team Eye and Ear, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary’s marathon team. “Mass. Eye and Ear has the latest and greatest technologies that can help my doctors in monitoring my infection. They are also one of the only places that can make the compound solution to treat Acanthamoeba Keratitis,” explains Elizabeth. “Mass. Eye and Ear is the home of the best technologies and medications that can successfully monitor and comfort patients that are unfortunate to contract this infection.”
Mass. Eye and Ear’s ophthalmologist and researcher Dr. Reza Dana has dedicated himself to research for treating this type of infection. The money that Elizabeth is raising as a member of Team Eye and Ear will fund that research, as well as other otology related research and the Norman Knight Hyperbaric Medicine Center at the hospital, one of the only Centers in New England to provide emergency hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
